Directional Probe Sensor: Tri-Axial Magnetometer and Accelerometer Attitude Sensing
Accurate wellbore trajectory measurement is essential for directional drilling and measurement while drilling (MWD) operations. The Directional Probe Sensor is designed to measure downhole magnetic field and gravity vectors, providing essential data for determining the orientation of the drilling assembly.
By integrating tri-axial magnetometers and accelerometers, the sensor captures measurements along three mutually perpendicular axes. These measurements are processed by a compatible MWD system to calculate wellbore inclination, azimuth, and other directional parameters.
Functional Advantages
Tri-Axial Magnetic Field Measurement The integrated tri-axial magnetometer measures magnetic field components along three axes, supporting azimuth calculations when used with appropriate calibration and geomagnetic reference data.
Three-Axis Gravity Sensing The accelerometer measures gravity components along three axes, providing data used to determine tool orientation and wellbore inclination.
Directional Survey Support Magnetic and gravity measurements provide essential inputs for calculating wellbore trajectory parameters in compatible MWD systems.
Compact Downhole Integration Designed for integration into compatible downhole measurement assemblies, helping acquire directional data in demanding drilling environments.
Reliable Measurement Data Proper calibration, sensor alignment, temperature compensation, and system processing help support consistent directional measurements under downhole operating conditions.
Core Applications
Measurement While Drilling (MWD) Provides magnetic and gravity measurement data for downhole directional measurement systems.
Directional Drilling Supports calculation of wellbore inclination and azimuth for trajectory monitoring and steering decisions.
Wellbore Trajectory Surveys Provides sensor inputs for determining drilling direction and monitoring changes in the wellbore path.
Downhole Tool Orientation Measures the orientation of the downhole assembly relative to gravity and the Earth’s magnetic field.
How the Directional Probe Sensor Works
During operation, the tri-axial accelerometer measures gravity components along the sensor’s three axes, while the tri-axial magnetometer measures the corresponding magnetic field components.
The MWD system processes these measurements using sensor calibration data and appropriate calculation algorithms to determine tool orientation and calculate directional parameters such as inclination and azimuth.
Measurement accuracy depends on sensor calibration, magnetic interference, tool alignment, temperature conditions, and the processing method used by the MWD system.
Petrogears supplies MWD-related tools and downhole measurement equipment for oil and gas drilling applications. Sensor specifications, interfaces, and integration requirements can be discussed according to the customer’s MWD platform.
